良い文章の鍵は、魔法のようなボルドーのグラスでも、上等なタバコでも、グルーヴィーな BGM でもない。鍵は集中だ。 うまく書くために必要なのは、テキストだけに完全に集中できる、禁欲的な環境だ。多くのプロのライターが SimpleText や TextEdit を使うのは、完全に気を散らさない書き物用プログラムがそれくらいしかないからだ。だがテキストエディタは完璧ではない。だから私たちは Writer を作った。
- 集中: コンピュータで書いていると、私たちはすぐに、あちこちを行き来する混沌とした編集ループに入り込み、元の考えの声や有機的な構造を壊してしまう。
- 方向づけ: ページ番号は、触れられる物理的な対象には有効だが、デジタルテキストではほとんど意味がない。私たちは、読書時間 のほうが有用な尺度だと考えている。
- タイポグラフィ: Writer には、iPad で完璧に機能するタイポグラフィが備わっている。業界最高のタイプデザイナー、スクリーンデザイナー、グラフィックデザイナーに協力してもらったので、そこを心配する必要はない。Writer では、考えのすべてを、見た目ではなく、書く内容に注ぎ込める。
Writer のしくみ
Writer には、グラフィカルな設定や書式機能がない。ユーザーインターフェースから気を散らす飾り気をすべて排除し、美しさはテキストの形にだけ置いている。集中し、方向を見つけ、自分を表現するのを助けるインタラクションロジックを使っている。iPad 版には、Dropbox 同期、句読点、矢印キーも加えた。
- Focus Mode は、ノイズのない書く空間を作る。自動修正、スペルミス、ツールバー、スクロール、編集、切り取り／コピー／ペーストは、テキストを前へ進める邪魔をしない。Focus Mode は、今作業している 3 行以外のすべてをフェードアウトさせる。行き詰まったときに起動し、ほかのすべてを遮断するという考えだ。
Professional Typography は、見た目がきれいなだけではない。読むプロセスを助ける。テキストをインターフェースとして見るなら、タイポグラフィはその使いやすさだ。一般的なテキストエディタはタイポグラフィ的に弱い（小さなフォント、詰まった行間、ばらばらな行長、余白不足）。さらに、デジタルテキストをうまく設計できるプロの技能を持つ人は少ない。Writer では、フォント種別、文字サイズ、カラム幅、行間、コントラストを、縦向きでも横向きでも最良の読書体験になるよう慎重に設定している。
Writer は、Bold Monday のタイプの魔術師たちが iPad 向けに作り、最適化した Nitti Light という等幅フォントを使っている。このフォントは、下書きらしい仮の性質を伝えつつ、読むのに退屈ではないまま、ゆっくり正確に読ませてくれる。
- Reading Time は、テキストを読むのにどれくらいかかるかの目安を示す。カーソル時間は、カーソル位置までの分と秒を示す。
- Keyboard Extensions は、矢印キーと句読点を提供する。私たちは、何を打つかではなく何を言うかに集中できるよう、スマートクォートを無効にした。スマートクォートをやめようという提案は、オタクの願望ではない。タイプの巨匠 Erik Spiekermann から出たものだ。
- Dropbox により、iPad からクラウドへ文書をシームレスにウェブ同期できるので、iTunes との同期に時間を取られない。
- Quick renaming — メニューバーで文書のタイトルをタップして、文書名をすぐに変更できる。
