Below are answers to common questions about iA Writer for macOS.

The iA Support Team is always happy to assist when you can’t find your answer on our website. You can reach out to us by email. We take a break on the weekends (JST), but during weekdays we aim to reply within 1-2 business days.

Sales and Refund

Same license for both iPadOS and macOS

It is a separate purchase, in the same way the Windows and macOS versions are distributed. Apple doesn’t allow developers to bundle apps between the Mac and iOS App Stores. Universal apps, introduced in 2020, are only supported for new apps released after 2020. Existing apps, such as iA Writer (since 2014), that were on the App Store before 2020, can’t be bundled together.

Do you have a trial period?

Yes, we do! You have a 14-day FREE trial period when you download iA Writer from our website. After the end of the trial period, you will be requested to purchase the app to keep on using it.

Can I Get a Refund?

You may. To see if you are eligible and what steps to follow, please check our Refund Policy.

Discounts

Any discounts available?

Educational discounts are available for the purchase of 20 licenses or more, via the Apple School Manager. Volume discounts are available for the purchase of 20 licenses or more, via the Apple Business Manager.

Apple’s App Store distribution does not support discounts on an individual basis, as much as we’d like to be able to offer that.

Does iA Writer go on sales?

We do not provide any discounts besides educational and volume purchases. iA Writer won’t be on sale for Black Friday and we do not follow any campaign in general.

App Store FAQ

iA Writer for macOS is distributed via Apple’s App Store. If you’ve purchased iA Writer and would like to reinstall it, but can’t find it in App Store, there are five possibilities:

1. Different Apple ID/ region

Please log in using that account to install or upgrade Writer. Also, please note that Apple doesn’t carry over purchases from other regions so you may not see it in your Purchased history if you’ve changed regions since you originally bought the app.

2. Got iA Writer for iPad instead of Mac

3. The App Store has forgotten about this

Double-check that you’re logged in using the Apple ID you originally used to purchase, then click the Buy Now button. After entering your password you’ll see a dialog informing you you’ve already purchased the app, and there’s no charge.

4. You accidentally hid the app

It is possible to hide previously purchased apps. To unhide, follow the steps outlined in Apple’s Hiding and unhiding purchases support article.

5. “There was an error with the App Store”

If you have this error, please wait a few minutes and try again. If this issue persists over a long period of time you might try the following:

1. Quit the App Store
2. Go to the Finder
3. Empty the trash
4. Choose Go To Folder from the Go menu
5. Type in /var/folders
6. Move all subfolders to the trash, but do not empty
7. Launch the App Store and pull the update the app
8. As the app is updated, one of the folders moved to the trash will be recreated in /var/folders¹
9. Move all folders but the recreated one back to /var/folders

¹ The last two steps might not be necessary as it appears that all essential folders and files will be recreated as needed. If you don’t want to do them, we recommend restarting your Mac instead.

Roadmap and Features

Do you have a roadmap?

We do not provide a roadmap nor give out timelines for unreleased features (beyond what has been publicly posted/commented on our blog). However, we do document and share feedback with the appropriate team members. If there is a feature request you would like to submit, please feel free to reach us by email.

What are the differences between platforms?

All our platforms are developed natively and differ slightly regarding the features provided. You can learn more about that on our Features page.

Is there a web version?

We developed our apps on each platform natively (iOS/ iPadOS, macOS, Android, Windows). We are not planning on developing a web-based version of iA Writer at the moment.

What languages are supported?

Our app for macOS is currently localized* in En De Jp Fr Es It Ru Cn Kr Pt. The Syntax Highlight feature is available for En De Fr Es It Ru. Style Check is available for En De Fr. Writer uses macOS System Spelling and Grammar (Spell Check)**

* the app’s interface is adapted depending on the country/ language of the user. ** Presence of 3rd party spelling and grammar tools/ plugins (i.e. Antidote, Grammarly) may impair the functionality of system options.

Technical Questions

Supported OS?

iA Writer for macOS 3.1+ is supported on macOS 10.11+. To allow us to focus on improving Writer and adding new features, we will consider dropping support for older operating systems once the majority of customers have migrated.

Redownload a previous version

You can always re-download past purchases from the Purchased section of the macOS App Store. Please check our dedicated section above App Store FAQ.

Data Privacy

iA Inc does not have access to any of the user’s content stored in iA Writer (text, images, and other files displayed in iA Writer’s Library). We do collect only two types of data: Crash Reports and Anonymous Statistics. You can learn more about that in our Privacy Policy.
